More on the picture shortly….first things first:

Hello Real Fresh TV blog, it’s good to see you!

It’s been nearly 10 weeks since the last blog post and though I must apologise profusely, that’s actually a good sign.  I’ve had my hands full working on a number of things one of which is a rather exciting digital media/social media training project that will be launching in early 2010.

It uses football as a way to engage hard-to-reach teens and young people in the North West with blogging, creating video for the web and Twittering.   The idea is that social media is used to help young people cultivate online reporting and journalism skills for the 21st century and develop authentic voice as writers.  I have to keep schtum on this for now but will share more as the project develops.

It’s ironic though, the more social media I use for others, the less time I have to blog or tweet about my own projects.

Still, rather than letting the backlog of blog posts grow, I’ve decided to share some of the things I’ve been working on in the last 10 weeks.

What I’ve been doing: Comixed

The first is Comixed, an innovative social media powered public engagement delivered for the Manchester Beacon for Public Engagement and Manchester Metropolitan University, in association with the Research Councils UK (RCUK).

From the Comixed website’s About Page:
Manchester Beacon designed Comixed as a way of bringing different people together to explore ideas collaboratively.

The first Comixed was themed around science and tied into the Manchester Science Festival.

Billed as a ‘Networked Conversation’ because of the use of social technologies to empower conversation around the issues raised, Comixed was a one day event that saw scientists, artists, community activists and academic discuss a number of pressing topics that affect all of us.

There was much scintillating debate on topics like the digital economy, climate change, synthetic biology, food security and ageing.  I live blogged the whole event and you can read what we got up to on the Comixed blog.

Highlight for me: a lengthy discussion on the ethics of being able to eating mangos in December(!) during the talk on the global threat to food security.

We published a number of ‘provocations’ on each topic before the event, inviting discussion on the Comixed blog and on Twitter.

These short blog posts seemed to strike a chord with the target audience ahead of the event; a popular provocation on ‘The Ageing Timebomb’ attracted 9 comments.

Here are pictures from the event on Flickr and you can watch a number of slideshows featuring the audio from the talks and debates on Vimeo.

Real Fresh TV delivered the social media strategy and implementation on Comixed, working with an all-star team including event producer and all round project demi-being, Julian Tait at Littlestar TV, web development team OH Digital and designer/illustrator duo We Are Young.

What I’ve been doing: AmbITion How To Guides

Other work has been writing two very comprehensive How To Guides to Blogging and Fundraising Online Using Social Media for Art Council England’s AmbITion project and putting together social media starter training courses.  I’ll share links to the How To Guides as soon as they have been posted on the Resources page of the AmbITion website.

What I’ve been doing: 7 Wonders in 7 Days Video Podcasts… and yet more planning

I’ve also been putting significant time into planning the social media-powered charity fundraising project I embark on in October 2010, 7 Wonders in 7 Days.

I’m really excited to announce that I’ve been able to launch a music inspired video podcast for the project which you can watch on iTunes.

Called 7 Songs in the Key of Life, the podcast features live music and interviews with the bands and musicians that performed at our first monthly music fundraiser for the project, raising much needed funds for Alzheimer’s Research Trust.

As far as the project goes, I hope to announce much more soon, I’ve met with Comic Relief and Virgin Money Giving to discuss a crowdsourced competition planned for the project in early 2010 and things are moving apace.

So… there’s lots going on in the background!

I still intend to blog my notes from September’s Social TV Forum as the event was incredibly inspiring.  Hopefully you won’t have to wait 10 weeks for the next post!

I’d be interested in your thoughts on some of Real Fresh TV’s recent work.  What do you think of the Comixed comics, created by illustrators who attended the event?

Or perhaps you have some ideas on how we could improve the 7 Wonders in 7 Days podcast.

Please share your thoughts in the comments below!
