Social Media Usage in the FTSE 100: Company Profile – AMEC
Posted on 22. Feb, 2008 by Chi-chi Ekweozor in Social Media Strategies
This article forms part of a study on social media usage amongst FTSE 100 companies.
Each company in the FTSE 100 index was reviewed on its usage of such social media tools as RSS feeds*, blogs, online video, podcasts and social media platforms like Flickr and Facebook on its main website and on occasion, on websites of well-known subsidiary companies.
*RSS feeds are a simple way of delivering fresh versions of a website’s content to online readers automatically.
According to the Guardian.co.uk Business Glossary:
“The FTSE 100 index comprises the 100 most highly capitalised blue chip companies on the London Stock Exchange, representing approximately 81% of the UK market.”
Here’s how global engineering giant, AMEC (AMEC.L) measured up.
| FTSE 100 Company | RSS | Podcast | Blog | Online Video | Audio | Facebook, Flickr, etc |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AMEC | Yes | No | No | Yes | No | No |
………………
Online Video/Webcasts: Yes
Annual Results Live webcast on 11 March, TV advert for recriuitment available as a streaming video
Usage of Social Media platforms: No
(Flickr, Facebook, YouTube, del.icio.us, Twitter, Digg etc)
According to Yahoo! Finance:
“The British group AMEC assists in the development and realisation of diverse projects in every line of business, from telecommunications to energy, from transport to the pharmaceutical industry. It has built itself a sound reputation in the field of civil engineering in Europe, the US and Asia.”
Commentary:
Impressive website featuring amongst other things, an online photo database for media use and an Expert Bank that is searchable by Sector and Expertise. RSS delivery of news and event information. High quality presentation of information, as would be expected for an engineering firm.
Recommendations:
- RSS delivery of news information should be placed in a more prominent position on the homepage; it is currently tucked within Financial Information sub section.
- An online video showing some of their recent projects would inform more effectively than a PDF document describing a project example.
- A recent TV advert for recruitment would benefit greatly from being featured on the home page; next to a ‘Want to work for us?’ image, perhaps. It is currently tucked away in the Careers section of the site.
All in all, not a bad effort but could be improved.
