Social Media Usage in the FTSE 100: Company Profile – BG Group
Posted on 26. Apr, 2008 by Chi-chi Ekweozor in Social Media Strategies
This article forms part of a study on social media usage amongst FTSE 100 companies.
Each company in the FTSE 100 index was reviewed on its usage of such social media tools as RSS feeds*, blogs, online video, podcasts and social media platforms like Flickr and Facebook on its main website and on occasion, on websites of well-known subsidiary companies.
*RSS feeds are a simple way of delivering fresh versions of a website’s content to online readers automatically.
According to the Guardian.co.uk Business Glossary:
“The FTSE 100 index comprises the 100 most highly capitalised blue chip companies on the London Stock Exchange, representing approximately 81% of the UK market.”
Here’s how natural gas giant, BG Group (BG.L) measured up.
| FTSE 100 Company | RSS | Podcast | Blog | Online Video | Audio | Facebook, Flickr, etc |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BG Group | Yes | No | No | No | No | No |
………………
Online Video/Webcasts: No
Usage of Social Media platforms: No
(Flickr, Facebook, YouTube, del.icio.us, Twitter, Digg etc)
According to Yahoo! Finance:
“BG Group collaborates with governments and corporate partners to promote and develop the natural gas market all over the world. BG Group Plc operates on four continents (Europe, America, Asia and the Middle East) and is also expanding its operations into the oil sector.”
Commentary:
BG Group has a well-designed, accessible website. Its impressive press release archive is neatly organised into tabs representing each year going back to 1997. RSS feeds are also supplied for Press Releases.
That’s it though. There is no online video of any kind. Which is disappointing as the slick web design and layout led one to expect more. Even the obligatory webcast of financial results is missing.
Recommendations:
- Start a company blog – As for British American Tobacco, another large multinational, launching a corporate blog with regular articles covering life behind the scenes would improve accessibility and provide engagement for potential shareholders etc.
