Social Media Usage in the FTSE 100: Company Profile – British Land

Posted on 26. Apr, 2008 by Chi-chi Ekweozor in Social Media Strategies

This article forms part of a study on social media usage amongst FTSE 100 companies.

Each company in the FTSE 100 index was reviewed on its usage of such social media tools as RSS feeds*, blogs, online video, podcasts and social media platforms like Flickr and Facebook on its main website and on occasion, on websites of well-known subsidiary companies.

*RSS feeds are a simple way of delivering fresh versions of a website’s content to online readers automatically.

According to the Guardian.co.uk Business Glossary:
“The FTSE 100 index comprises the 100 most highly capitalised blue chip companies on the London Stock Exchange, representing approximately 81% of the UK market.”

Here’s how the biggest landowner in London, British Land (BLND.L) measured up.

According to Yahoo! Finance:

British Land Logo“The British Land Company is special because it is the biggest landowner in London. Its portfolio includes offices and shopping malls, in Britain and Ireland, making it the biggest British real estate owner.”

Commentary:
Of the five company websites reviewed only British Land’s included RSS feeds directly on its homepage. Here’s British Land’s clear accompanying description of RSS feeds:

What is RSS?

RSS is an easy and convenient way to find out when certain areas of the British Land website have been updated. We currently offer feeds for our press releases and presentations.

Webcams showing progress of British Land’s key developments is a fantastic use of online video and one not used by any of the other 15 companies so far. Admittedly the pictures appear to be second-separated stills but hey, it’s still very cool! Top marks for trying.

Recommendations:

  • Start a company blog – Inclusion of a blog would be a welcome addition to a fantastically easy to use website. British Land are involved in constructing large public and private spaces like shopping centres and multi-storey apartments so a company blog could function as an easy way to engage with members of the public and gather useful feedback.
