Revisiting BP’s Use of Social Media, 2 Years On

A couple of years ago I started reviewing FTSE 100 companies use of social media.

One of the companies I reviewed was the now beleaguered oil giant BP.

As I said then:

My pre-evaluation expectation of how the company will fare:
I expect BP, who have significant consumer facing operations in the UK, to have a social media-rich web presence.  Let’s see.

There are Only Two Kinds of Online Advertising: Relevant Advertising and Spam

Alex Iskold over on popular technology blog, Read/WriteWeb has just published a thought-provoking piece on the myth of contextual advertising on social networks like Facebook.

By ‘contextual’ advertising, he is referring to advertising that is served to the user based on information the advertiser has about him or her.

He does not think the contextual ‘Social Ads’ on Facebook work very well because of “[Facebook’s] lack of understanding of its users.”

His argument is that Facebook does not know enough about him to serve relevant ads (or does not appear to use the information it knows about him effectively enough to serve relevant ads) because much of its information is unstructured.

Now, I’m no computer scientist but I beg to differ.

YouTube Raises File Limit to 1GB

With the recent announcement of a new multi-file uploader and new file limits of 1GB, YouTube is steadily moving towards becoming the video distribution platform of choice for content owners looking to build a global audience for their content and monetise that audience…

I know, I’ve seen YouTube’s InVideo ads in the UK. Yes, they are coming.

And they look pretty good, actually. The example I saw was much better quality than the video it was embedded in.
