Presenting A Beginner’s Guide to Social Media at #smc_mcr

A Beginner’s Guide to Social Media

There has already been much discussion on the web about the incredible meeting of minds that was the first Social Media Cafe of the year last night at The Northern.  You can read Manchester Evening News blogger Sarah Hartley’s 5 takeaways at the Mancunian Way blog which includes links to videos.

The first in the unconference format, myself and all the other speakers were bowled over by the enthusiasm of all who attended.

I presented a well attended Beginner’s Guide to Social Media session, slides after the jump:

The first Social Media Single: “Credit Crunch Christmas” by Micky P. Kerr

Social Media Christmas Number One

Earlier this week I shared how Peter Hartey, a recent attendee of the Social Media Starter Course was seeing some fantastic online success around a social media project he launched after attending the course in October.

Hot on the heels of Peter’s good news, I’ve been contacted by another Social Media Starter Course attendee with details of a fascinating social media project, this time featuring a Christmas single!

Liam Walsh of Ask Me PR is currently promoting an inventive musician’s Credit Crunch-themed Christmas single using social media.

Landmine Charity MAG Kicks Off Ambitious Poetry Prize Using Social Media

MAG (Mines Advisory Group) Poetry Prize 2009

It’s not often I get the opportunity to combine social media with a worthy cause and so I was rather excited to hear that one of the last attendees on the Social Media Starter Course has joined forces with MAG (Mines Advisory Group), the Manchester landline charity, to kick off an ambitious online poetry competition using social media.

Peter Hartey is behind Poetic Republic, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of the poetic arts and humanitarian causes.  Poetic Republic was born out of Poetica, a completely open writing forum based in Central Library, Manchester.

Social Media Starter Course Overview

Social Media Starter Course Overview

In these times of economic uncertainty, how do you stand out in a crowded marketplace?

Your competition is increasingly your customers themselves, empowered by social media platforms like blogs, micro-blogging tools like Twitter and profiles on social networking and video sharing sites.

They are staying connected with each other for longer online, and increasingly via the mobile web using smartphones like the iPhone, creating and consuming information about products and services in a virtuous circle of digital word of mouth.

It is time to admit the inevitable.

Next speaking engagement: Bite The Mango Festival Film Festival, Bradford

Bite The Mango Film FestivalOne of the best things about having a background in creating original video for the web is the versatility of perspectives it provides.

I’m thrilled to have been asked to speak at a panel discussing alternative methods for film distribution at the Bite The Mango Film Festival, taking place at the National Media Museum in Bradford.

Putting On A Social Media Starter Course

SocialMediaStarterCourseI’m putting together our first Social Media Starter course.

The idea is to provide a practical forum for people to learn how to get started in social media.

It’s a two hour interactive seminar/workshop, packed full of insights into creating and executing social media and content marketing campaigns that work on the web.

Keeping with the classroom theme, I’m deliberately keeping it small with attendance limited to only 20 places.
