The Learning Social Media by Doing Course Overview

The Learning Social Media By Doing Course has been put together in response to requests by attendees of the popular Social Media Starter Course for a more practical, hands-on training event.

Designed as a follow up to the entry level Social Media Starter Course, the Learning Social Media By Doing Course is a practical half day workshop that gives anyone new to social media a safe environment to try on the tools for size.

Do you need to Twitter for work?  Have you just been nominated company blogger but don’t know your WordPress from your Movable Type?  Do you feel overwhelmed by all this talk of trackbacks, pingbacks and Google PageRank?

Then the Learning Social Media By Doing Course is for you.

Designed for the casual user
The Learning Social Media By Doing Course is a structured two hour workshop in which attendees are given hands-on guidance, advice and support in using social media platforms like Twitter, WordPress, Flickr and YouTube to communicate effectively with web users.

This is by no means an introductory guide to twittering or using Flickr.

The Learning Social Media By Doing Course is a carefully structured training session in which you collaborate with other attendees to put together a social media campaign, track results and share outcomes with a web panel comprising other social media users around the world.

Course Pre-Requisites

Attendees will need:

•    A wifi-enabled laptop
•    An account on one of the following social media platforms:

Topics Covered

Which social media tool is best for me?

Social media platforms abound: Twitter, WordPress, Friendfeed, Facebook, Flickr.  And that’s without even covering  video!

The Learning Social Media By Doing Course offers a safe environment to ask those embarrassing questions about which social media tool to employ in a business context and which provide the best return on investment.

We explain which tools are best suited for short sharp social campaigns and discuss the pros and cons of ‘free’ blogs.

Roll Up Your Sleeves and Get Stuck In

The Learning Social Media By Doing Course is a hands on introduction to a social technologist’s tools of the trade.

Expect to leave having had hands-on experience of using Twitter, a group blog and other social media tools to solve a communication problem.

Can You Solve My Marketing Problem?

As with the Social Media Starter Course, we devote a substantial section of the course to solving a real marketing problem using social media.

Please bring along a real marketing problem or issue you would like addressed.

This time you have the benefit of a web audience.

One Central Park, ManchesterThe Venue
The Learning Social Media By Doing Course takes place at Manchester’s multi-million pound technology and enterprise centre, One Central Park, located just two miles from Manchester city centre.

The course is delivered in a small, intimate classroom environment with no more than thirteen attending ensuring you have one-to-one contact with the course leader.

Lunch and refreshments are provided.

How Do I Benefit?
Perhaps you already need to use social media at work.  How better to develop your social media toolset than by using the various tools in a safe and structured training environment?

Most of the other attendees are in a similar position:  they are responsible for communicating for an organisation on the web and regularly feel the fear: What do I say??

Alongside a thorough introduction to the uses of Twitter as a ‘conversational research’ tool, we show you how to interact instead of interrupting and demonstrate why honesty is so important on the social web.

What Will I Learn?
After attending the Learning Social Media By Doing Course you will:

  • Have practical experience of how to use social media tools to get answers to problems
  • Know how to blog like a pro
  • Know how to use Twitter to connect like minded individuals to your cause

Who Should Attend:

• marketing, media and PR professionals
• owners of small to medium sized businesses (SMEs)
• charities and voluntary organisations
• journalists
• media, marketing & journalism students
• anyone who needs to sell directly to consumers online
